The fact that academics are using LLMs makes it so hard to care about reading or writing anything new. Our timeline is the worst

I know other people have it way worse. But I've given some killer talks that need to be turned into papers, and I have a bunch of half written things that I need to live inside of for a while, and that was always what I loved about academia...so I just miss it.

Sadly, I have had a student whol told me that they had used ChatGPT to tell me how a short article we had read could be applied to something that they took to be important about their life...

I think Chaplin’s Modern Times would be a good option. But they also have the Melies “A trip to the moon” short and a compilation of Betty Boop cartoons. Not sure if it’s in there, but the 1932 Minnie the Moocher with Cab Calloway seems like a good addition (on YouTube if nowhere else)

Do you have access to Kanopy? They have really good selection of early film right now including a bunch of short films that could be fun to add

I think I figured out how to fix it by bumping up my lectures, bumping up the days where all they do is listen to an album, and bumping down their reading!

I haven't read yet, but from a quick glance @mljanderson.bsky.social it seems like this might help to explain why remembering things I've listened to using text-to-speech often comes with a sense of where I was walking when I heard something!
