I agree. It's premature and not constructive. I think there's a lot of raw emotion fueling it, after the right spent so much time doing the same. It's an unforced error, though, allowing them to say "both sides made wrong assumptions" if it turns out not to be 100% true.

Verb is typically at the end, but due to these modifiers, it can be subject-object-verb or object-subject-verb. My read is that the incumbent is very old and hasn’t yet committed to running again. The party probably had someone lined up as a succesor for this or a near future election, and Kat is essentially usurping (I say that positively) that position.
