Considering who raised me who could really be surprised at how I turned out

Awh man, what a great question! My deck’s answer surprised me & then it made me cry. I was just reading in How To Know When We Will Die about the necessity & potency of crip dignity & advocacy for our needs being met, how it can spread so much further than the individual. This is what I try to do.

One of the reasons disability is so devastating to capitalism is because the main thing it devastates is chronological, quantitative time. The ableism that capitalism feeds on requires and enforces chronological time, enshrining quantity over quality, dictating eight valuable hours per day, forty hours per week. Time that never deviates from its rote linearity can be flattened into one kind, counted and priced, bought and sold. Time without quality can work ceaselessly, for day is no different than night, winter no different than summer, time soaked through with the need to rest, mourn, care, breathe, no different than time driven by labor and profit. Capitalism loves this kind of time because it needs it in order to work. Disability, however, operates according to ‘crip time,’ a foundational term in the language of disability justice. Alison Kafer describes crip time as the kind of time that ‘requires reimagining our notions of what can and should happen in time, or recognising how expectations of ‘how long things take’ are based on very particular minds and bodies … Rather than bend disabled bodies and minds to meet the clock, crip time bends the clock to meet disabled bodies and minds.’

I know it says no explanations, but fuck that/this is more story than explanation. In late 2019 a friend & I saw Michelle Tea & I got to meet her & try to tell her what this book means to me. She was warm & kind & it made my year. It’s a memory I’ve returned to often in my pandemic isolation 💜
