turns out fully empty transparent PNGs generate black thumbnails in Windows Explorer... at first I was annoyed, but it tells me exactly which frames have nothing in them! neat!

Took a bit of work, but I finally figured out how to get transparent (alpha enabled) output video from Resolve with good external support (ffmpeg & OBS). QuickTime -> Apple ProRes -> 4444 & Export Alpha. Turn off Constant Bit Rate for a sane file size.
