…but as he matured, he was less interested in barking at people unless they were holding leaf blowers or parcels. Dogs, cats, squirrels, and birds were also less interesting (probably because our other dog did such a good job of it). Foxes and deer still got him going to the end.

In the days when Phil sat on my patio and got barked at, he barked at people, other dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, toads, cars, rocks that weren’t in the same place as they were last time he saw them, and occasionally leaves that fell nearby…

Barking was one of his favorite pastimes. Barking, fetch, and gleeful destruction 🥰

Thanks. I don’t think you got to meet him formally - just barking through the window, lol. He’d mellowed and sweetened considerably over the years. 💚

You can take a Pope out of Chicago, but you can’t take the Chicago out of a Pope 🤣

He was my most specialest boy. Taking away the pain and fear our fuzzy bebes feel at the end of life is the last, best gift we can give them, but it’s still hard. 💚

Plus, if you name it after Trump, he’ll probably sign it without even reading it first. ‘Finally, a law named for ME! Take that, Obamacare!’

His last 12ish hours were rough, but once the initial palliative cocktail took hold, his eyes cleared and he relaxed a good while with me before the final shot. We both knew it was time, and were ready.

When done correctly, no more than clipping your toenails does. The part of the hoof they’re working with is literally dead keratin, just like our nails are. Just have to be careful not to hit the live tissue it’s attached to.

The lesson I have learned over the last 10 years more than any other: Hatred and bigotry and greed are the flames of fascism, but its kindling are people who claim to be well-meaning, yet diagnose our problem as "polarization" without giving thought to the causes over which we are polarized.

Thank you, dear heart. He’s got his favorite ball with him for the trip, and a lock of mommy’s hair. Truly the best little guy. 💚

We all blocked his number after the first date.

They are. I’m going to miss him terribly.

This was the only day I’ve known him that he never smiled once, even when being given turkey bites or hearing his ball squeak. Between that and the piteous yelps every time he moves, I knew it was time. Just trying to keep him warm, still and comfy now.

When I remember all the JAG briefs, revisions, rebriefs, lectures about authorities and permissions, re-revisions, and re-rebriefs we went through to get to yes on *non-kinetic, non-lethal* fires, this is utterly horrifying.

Hahaha, I would’ve been way too literal to pick up on that! ‘Snipe hunting now? They won’t be transiting this area again until March.’ 🤣
November 29, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Sorry to go all bird-nerd on you, lol! There are a few different species of snipe, but they’re all mottled brown, with very long beaks. The imaginary snipes we hunt can be any color at all, though!

That’s a green plover, also called the northern lapwing. This is a snipe.

Ass on the grass? Greed in the weeds? Lard in the yard? Clod on the sod?
