Scientific Name: Psilopterus pequenocacador (Bare Winged Little Hunter) Overall dimensions: .9 meters at the hips at 20 lbs Following the extinction of most of the planet's non avian dinosaurs, mammals have famously bounced into most niches. However, for a good chunk of time, Australia and South America, isolated from other continents, had ecosystems of there own. In the case of the latter, there were carnivorous marsupial relatives, terrestrial crocodiles, a whole assortment of hooved mammals, and most famous of all: Terror Birds. Their demise has often been associated with the arrival of denizens from North America following the Interchange, but climate change thanks to the rising of the Andes is perhaps what did them instead (though Jurupari and raccoon relatives could have contributed however). Atop the tepui, roosting in the forests, hunting in the pampas, is the last of this great family: The Mani. From afar, their diminutive size would mistake them for the Seriama birds that also roam about the tepui. It's really their diet that sets them apart. Following the Interchange, tapirs, horse foals, even an Alfinete calf are fair game as they are chased down and slain with a good strike of their hooked beak. With the temperament of the cassowary across the Pacific (even Uaica avoid them), and rewilding efforts expanding their range as far north at the Yucatan Peninsula, civilians are advised to keep their distance and stay in groups. If not for the beak, they can deliver such a kick as to disembowel a small dog.
