Exciting news! We're keeping bees in the garden next season, my brother is just completing his mentorship with the local apiary. We've completed hive no.1 (pic below was completion of stain+varnish - passed inspection by Thomas). Hive no.2 built & awaiting weatherproofing. Bee-autiful. 🐝 #Bees
Nearly completed traditional shape beehive. Varnished red cedar wood with a gable grey roof. Standing on some cardboard as just drying, in the middle of a very dry lawn with a tall tree in the background and a brindle boxer dog with his nose to the cardboard wondering if he can do the tablecloth trick and whip it out from under the hive!

In the upper picture the tongue is retracted inside the beak and is so long that it wraps up around the top of the skull. In the lower pic it is extended outside the beak - very long, wouldn't just sit inside the beak. The tongue purportedly acts as an interior shock absorber for when the woodpecker is pecking, but this is disputed by many.

Boxer dog called Freddie, his front leg is bandaged almost all the way up as he broke his toe, he's wearing an inflatable donut collar so he can't reach the bandage to remove it .... and he's looking really sorry for himself. ps. he is fine now, though he did break a further 2 toes on the other foot months later (he loves running fast, stopping fast & fast cornering - hence the propensity to break toes!).

My most favourite useless fact is that a woodpecker's tongue wraps around the back of its brain when retracted, like an internal safety helmet/dampener. If you've ever wondered if all that pecking gives them headaches ... now you know, answer is no. 🤓

Update: Carter had his 2nd diamond burr procedure yesterday. Healing was going well until he caught an overly happy puppy tail to the affected eye! (told you his luck was abysmal!) 🥹 Considering digging out his Doggles for protection. Patient sore, but doing well. #DogsOfBlueSky

So, we just got an email from Ocado (grocery delivery co) - a sort of round-up of our shopping year - a 'how we did' kinda thing. Anyways, turns out we were THE No.1 shopper for Butterkist sweet & salty popcorn, in the South East UK. New Year resolution, this year THE NO.1 IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. 😎

Update on Carter's Eye Op. Had 2nd check-up today, specialist is pleased with progress, the ulcer has shrunk 2mm (was whole width of the eye). Still on strong pain meds & eyedrops but he did open the eye today, small win! Re-check next Mon. Thanks for well wishes all! 💙 #DogsOfBlueSky

He is what can only be described as reclining on a sofa, against the high arm rest, with his head to one side, eyes closed, and looking very sorry for himself (think swan lake, dying swan). A very poor thing.

This poor fellow, Carter, is at the vet today, his eye ulcer isn't healing so they're doing a 'diamond burr' procedure (will spare the details, pretty gruesome). 85% of cases start to heal within 48hrs, let's hope Carter isn't the 15%! He always has such rotten luck. 💙 🐾 🐶 #DogsOfBlueSky
