Peas have a sort of alien beauty to them. Definitely in my top 3 favourite field crop to survey.

It also helps that I'm counting Weevil bite marks - cute even though they are destructive.

Poor little lady thought this was a dandelion..

Flea beetles are out in force! These were taken on volunteer canola around Edmonton. They've been active in S AB for a month now - but will be an issue as canola emerges.

Photos snapped on a windy day - and the amount of stem feeding is pretty high.

We are getting reports of damage in alfalfa fields (tiger moths - larva pictured below) and winter wheat and forages (army cutworm) in Southeastern Alberta.

For anyone who does fieldwork: How excited are you to start at the beginning of the field season?

I get giddy, even after 10+ years. Beautiful AB prairie views like this help, though!

AGI bug crew is still looking for a few more pea fields to scout this year for pea leaf weevil!

Check 2024 survey results to help make seed treatment plans.

We will be out in the spring counting notches along field edges from 4-6 node stage.
A pea leaf weevil looks into the screen and asks the viewer "Hey, growing peas in Alberta?" Results of the 2024 pea leaf weevil survey in Alberta. Results are displayed as a heat map across the province, with a scale ranging from 0, 0-1, >1-3, >3-9, >9-27, and >27. There is data from 224 fields across the growing region of Alberta. Most fields are in the lowest category for number of notches. Areas around Lethbridge and to the NE and NW have moderate levels, while moderate- high levels South of Edmonton to Mountainview county, and North of Edmonton to Athabasca. Last week while frantically packing and prepping.. I needed to take a break and think about Edmonton without a foot of snow..
