I can't imagine that Girl Scouts will be allowed to meet either (the scouts referred to in articles are the org formerly known as Boy Scouts). So when banned from meeting at bases, many overseas kids will be effectively locked out. Renegade underground troop meetings?? Hate this admin so much!

A Houston teenager with autism who was placed with immigration agents after his mom reported him missing is still in federal custody and will undergo surgery to remove his appendix, advocates said Monday. Emmanuel Gonzalez-Garcia went missing Oct. 4 after wandering off from the corner of Clay and Hempstead Road in northwest Houston, where he was selling fruit with his mother. “He is safe. He is scheduled to have emergency surgery sometime today to remove his appendix,” said Cesar Espinosa, the executive director of FIEL Houston, an immigrant-aid organization that is assisting the family.

Two years ago, Xavier Davis was boarding a Jefferson Lines bus to ride home from North Dakota to Minnesota when the driver told Davis and another passenger they needed to ride in the back of the bus. Both passengers were Black men. An argument ensued and the driver threatened to call the police if the two men didn’t move to the back and sit down. The men, who did not know each other, did so. Four months later, Davis initiated a Minnesota Department of Human Rights investigation. A memorandum filed earlier this year by Commissioner Rebecca Lucero found probable cause the driver discriminated against the passengers because of their race. This week, Davis filed a lawsuit against Jefferson Lines and the driver in Hennepin County District Court. Lucero wrote in her memo that Jefferson Lines and the driver failed to give any reason that wasn’t racially discriminatory for forcing Davis and the other passenger to ride in the back of the bus. She said the investigation showed that the driver let white passengers sit where they wanted, and that making the two Black passengers sit in the back of the bus was driven by “racially discriminatory stereotypes underlying the interaction.” The driver, identified only as “John Doe” in the lawsuit, gave several arguments for why the two passengers needed to sit in the back of the bus. Jefferson Lines policy is to board the bus on a first come, first served basis, but the driver told the Black passengers that company policy was to board from the back of the bus to the front. The driver also thought the two passengers were travelling together, even though their tickets were for different destinations, and he later maintained that the passengers smelled like marijuana. After the situation became argumentative, the driver threatened to involve law enforcement.

Now, the DOJ has taken the first real step towards expanding the government’s efforts to strip citizenship from those who applied for it and received it — and has suggested it will be doing so for explicitly political reasons. It came in a June 11 memo dryly titled “Civil Division Enforcement Priorities,” written by Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate. Last on the list of five priorities is denaturalization. The memo directs the government to “maximally” go after denaturalization cases, and ranks which kinds of cases should receive the most attention. Denaturalization… Earlier I had read that they were expected to target those naturalized in the past 10 years, now this article implies free speech and political action may create more targets, no matter how long they’ve been citizens.

Trump is now picking up where he left off. The administration has said that it will pursue these denaturalization cases in civil rather than criminal court proceedings. In such proceedings, individuals are not entitled to an attorney, and the legal bar for the administration to prove that a citizen did something to warrant denaturalization is lower than it would be in criminal court. There is also no limit on how long after naturalization the government can seek to revoke someone’s citizenship. All of that raises due process concerns. “Somebody might not know about the proceedings against them. There might be a good defense that they’re not able to offer. There’s no right to an attorney,” Burke Robinson said. “It seems to me to be really problematic.”

Trump’s lawyers, moreover, are quite candid about what it means if the Supreme Court accepts these jurisdictional arguments. “To the extent an action does not fit” within their proposed process, they argue, “the result is that judicial review is not available.” So, if Trump prevails, many of the immigrants he hopes to target will not have any recourse in any court. Many immigrants, in other words, could be deported without any judge or other neutral adjudicator considering whether the immigrant will be tortured in the country the Trump administration wants to send them to — both circumventing the Convention Against Torture and giving the administration a cruel new weapon in its immigration crackdown.

At UCLA, faculty members recently circulated advice to international students: “Don’t say anything to ICE. Don’t sign anything. Tell them to speak to your attorney,” it said alongside a hotline number. “... Please have a stamped, pre-addressed envelope to someone you trust with you in the event of an ICE arrest, you can send the mail to alert them you have been detained.” During “know your rights” training events, some international students have been told to “not go out unless you need to and make sure someone knows where you are going if you do go out,” said Randall Kuhn, a UCLA professor of public health who last year joined protesters.
