Quick question, how is it the data for 2026? Thanks

Is reading English? Is singing Music, is painting Art?
Like others say, what is recreational maths? I agree that logic puzzles, games, etc would all be those

Mine is in mechanics.
Which cat stayed attached to the tree for longest? The one with the biggest μ.

I’m still grateful to @susanwhitehouse.bsky.social for showing me the method using simultaneous equations 3 years ago. Susan’s CPD is great! 😁

I’m the same as you. However 2 of my highest achievers just learnt u.w=v.w and -eu.I=v.I and didn’t consider visualising it.
My colleague likes the dot product as he thinks he can visualise it with the unit vector of impulse.
I think it’s great we see it differently, which shows students will too.

I always explain it that if the object was to carry on what is the angle between that line and the new line of motion. I get the kids to extend the initial line and it all becomes visual.

Hi Susan. It was 3 different instances. Really annoying and frustrating. One of them was lost on a 7 marker. Thankfully they are still off to study at Imperial

I understand the markscheme, and so do they. But losing a mark folllowing some of the highest level working required for any further mathematician due to rounding not to the degree given, but still a good degree of accuracy seems harsh. Checking if students can round is a year 7 skill!

It’s the same in Pearson Further Maths I’m afraid. One student lost 3 marks due to things like rounding to 4 sf and not nearest whole number following outstanding work on a 7 marker. It cost the students their A*. I know they need to be accurate but they clearly know how to do really tricky maths

I teach this route. It’s a good challenge for those students who find FM1 accessible. It’s interesting but it requires an extremely strong level of calculus. It is also quite short so there is plenty of time to practice and consolidate. Feel free to reach out if you have any specific questions.

So using change of base?
Shame it’s not officially on the Edexcel spec anymore. (I do still teach it though)

Thanks. We haven’t shared them electronically but printing them off for them just seems weird these days! Can’t believe any centre would be using them for internal assessment now.

So it seems I should have looked at more past papers. Q7 from June 2023 has a question too!
April 11, 2025 at 5:09 PM
Great thanks, so I’ll take that as a yes, it can be tested. I’m just struggling to find any questions (apart from the one you have now given me) for the students to practice with

I think we should be calling it gravitational acceleration when we teach it rather than just gravity. Perhaps that would help.
Apparently Newton said this…
April 5, 2025 at 8:14 AM
It’s always tricky for students and even some staff to get their heads around. They think that gravity is what makes an object accelerate. Google doesn’t help clear it for them either
April 5, 2025 at 7:12 AM
Is gravity a force?
April 5, 2025 at 5:11 AM
Thanks for the reply. Yeah general centre of mass and circular motion are fine to get it’s just the variable density that is our biggest issue. I might need to try to make some. Eeek

I’m new to Bluesky so apologies for jumping on such an old messsge.
This seems to be the most difficult topic area for my FM2 students to grasp. Fascinating to see them struggle and get to grips.
It’s just frustrating to have such a lack of resources for this and the rest of the FM2 course.
