(3/3) Java for scripting still has its challenges but with other relevant JEPs on the way (e.g. openjdk.org/jeps/495 & openjdk.org/jeps/494) it looks it will become increasingly attractive.

(2/3) Seems to be mostly down to #JBang and recent Java lang enhancements (e.g. openjdk.org/jeps/458) making it easier & tipping trade-offs in Java's favour.
