Yes, I agree. It’s absolutely shocking. Not saying it would be a tourist attraction, but it should certainly sit within people’s collective identity like the S&DR.

They open it for tours quite often, which I hope to capitalise on in the future!

This particular temple was constructed by Clare Arnold Clayton Greene, more notably the designer of churches and schools. St Gabriel's was designed by him (which we'll visit in the near future), as well as the Ryhope Colliery Welfare Institute and Ferryhill School.

My understanding is these fraternal organisations are just one big networking group, whether it be for fundraising or community. Its interior is likely similar to that you might be more familiar with at Beamish.

The foundation stone was lodged in place by Lord Ravensworth just before his death, with the intenion for it to be used for dinners, gatherings and social functions.

The Park Road temple was constructed in 1932 after two years of constructed and was to be used by 10 separate lodges from across the area.

This building replaced the end of Douro Terrace and provided much more ample space for Masons than the old Masonic Hall in the East End from 1785 - one of the oldest masonic temples in the country, though this one replaced the old hall on Toward Road opposite Mowbray Park.

This name has been banded about for years as a ***supposed*** crook (and not my words). I'm surprised with such a reputation he got voted in, but then again people lean into that 'maverick' persona.
