In my experience, it's a site's coverage of small and/or niche games & genres, that creates a loyal audience.

The masses clicking through the big articles don't care which site they're reading on. Once they click away, they're gone.
Fans of niche writing will continue to show up.

The last time I checked the mark-up by local retailers for the OLED model was horrendous, around $400 above Valve's official Au price. I just couldn't stomach paying that much over.
