Their white cloak blends with the snow swirling through the air, the matte fabric refusing to reflect the aurora borealis as it ripples through the sky. The hooded figure pauses in front of the fence to our cottage. I tuck my knees into my chest, sinking deeper into the couch, as they stare through the glass. My breath hitches when they adjust the iron chain hung around their neck, the circular pendant reflecting the moonlight. I kiss my thumb before tapping it to my heart, throat, and head, praying to Mielikki, our goddess of healing and luck, that the Savior moves on without demanding a measurement. Once the chain sits perfectly centered on their chest, their frail fingers disappear beneath billowing sleeves, and they turn away. I release a sigh of relief as they float down the snow-covered cobblestones, not a single footstep left in their wake. The disappearance of the cloth void allows the shimmering droplets of color to flow freely through the air once again. “Akio!” My mother’s scream breaks through the peaceful moment. I whip my head around as my father flies through the kitchen door, running down the hall to my twin sister’s room. “Akio! She’s dead!” My heart stops. I blink. She can’t be. I just gave her lunch a few hours ago. She was laughing with me. Mom’s pained wail breaks me out of my trance. I spring up from the sofa, my skirt cascading to the floor. I sprint to Tove’s room and freeze in the door frame. Mom is splayed across my sister’s lifeless body. Tove’s emerald eyes, the perfect match to my own, stare up at the ceiling. My hand flies to my mouth, trembling against my lips as I listen to my mother writhe in pain. Comparative titles.
