I'd say that Diamond Dogs feels like a coda to the Ziggy era, and while Young Americans is sui generis, it seems more like a lead up to Station to Station.

My contribution to the discussion is that, at the time, it felt like a major shift between Diamond Dogs and Young Americans, and again, between Scary Monsters and Let's Dance. (The latter probably in part because of the longer than usual gap between albums)
