Getting to pick a topic makes things so much more interesting - I always used to love when I got to pick my own focus, though I find a list is really useful for students when there could be endless avenues to explore #LTHEchat

I’m a big fan of letting students choose the direction and focus of tasks or assignments - makes it so much more meaningful to the individual and I find they get so much more involved #LTHEchat

I learn so much more on the days I commute into work - it’s like having some carved out time for reading which I may not prioritise otherwise 📖

I bet that opportunity to communicate with others is a such a welcome offering for many students, especially those who might be finding navigating friendships etc a bit challenging. It goes beyond the learning and gives them a sense of community #LTHEchat

That sounds amazing - it sometimes feels like students are underestimated, but schemes like this would provide not only a great learning opportunity, but a chance for students to demonstrate what they’re capable of #LTHEchat

Workshops like that are so important, not just for independent study whilst at uni, but for the skill of critical analysis that they’ll need more broadly in their day to day, especially with so much of our lives (and what we consume) being online now #LTHEchat

I think that the reminder that you can pick and choose what suits you best is vital - when they’re already overwhelmed we don’t need to our more pressure on. Equally, I think that bit of freedom makes them even more likely to explore because it takes away the pressure!

It’s a difficult one isn’t it? There are so many barriers, but they look different for all of our students…

A3 Knowing how, when and where to start. We do need to scaffold independent study and learning to learn for our students, especially at Level 4, setting them up for learning independently for life. #LTHEChat

What do you think causes the lower engagement with your UG students? #LTHEchat

When independent study is completely new to students I think that interaction can be a great motivator, especially when it gives them that reassurance that while it’s independent, they’re not completely alone #LTHEchat

That’s a really good point - I think it’s assumed that students know what to do with resources, free time, feedback etc, but for a lot of them it’s all completely new! #LTHEchat

Do students get to discuss their thoughts/experiences of their independent study when they come to the next session? #LTHEchat

Do you prefer shorter or longer videos on YouTube? I’m a big fan of a documentary but really appreciate a lot of the short form content available if I’m new to a subject #LTHEchat

What might that guidance look like? Would you prefer to be directed to particular resources or just given an idea of the kind of activities you could engage with? #LTHEchat

It’s easy to forget that there are so many options for independent study - immersive activities like this are a great option #LTHEchat

Love the idea of doing something outdoors! What kind of activities might that involve? #LTHEchat

Do you have any favourite platforms or books you like to refer to?

I love that - our practice is so varied that the way we demonstrate it should be too #LTHEchat
