And the transportation dept, at the behest of the fire dept, has recently standard mandating “mountable” traffic circles with curb heights so low as to be functionally equivalent to paint. And neighbors are unwilling to allow them to remove stop signs. The worst of both worlds.

One thing I’ve found to be convincing are illustrations of what you want the street to look like. Pictures really do speak 1000 words. My wife created a visualization of a Slow and Low Traffic zone for a demo project we want to propose.

Insane how one car hitting a power line can knock out power to an entire neighborhood, forcing PG&E and Public Works to scramble to restore power. And it's just like .. a normal Wednesday

The NTSB graphic on car speeds vs pedestrian fatality rates hides a crucial fact: injury collisions are 10x fatal ones, and can be life altering. Oaklands Highland Hospital is constantly treating traffic victims with broken arms/legs and head trauma. Particularly children and the elderly.

To Berkeley Mayor and City Council, THE BERKELEY OHLONE GREENWAY MODERNIZATION & SAFETY PROJECT SHOULD BE PUT ON HOLD WHILE THE FOLLOWING ISSUES ARE ADDRESSED: THE LOT AT 1297 HOPKINS STREET BERKELEY- NE CORNER OF PERALTA AVENUE, WAS A GASOLINE AND SERVICE STATION FROM 1927 TO 1963 OR LATER. THE TANKS HAVE NEVER BEEN REMOVED & THE SITE HAS NEVER BEEN CLEANED UP. CITY OF BERKELEY FAILED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IN ITS PURSUIT OF THE BERKELEY OH LONE GREENWAY MODERNIZATION & SAFETY PROJECT, WHICH WOULD DIG UP THE STREET & SIDEWALK AND CONSTRUCT A TWO-WAY CONCRETE BICYCLE TRACK RIGHT WHERE THIS GAS AND SERVICE STATION OPERATED FOR 37 OR MORE YEARS CITY FINALLY ACKNOWLEDGED PAST EXISTENCE OF THE HOPKINS STREET GAS STATION, BUT APPEARS TO BE MINIMIZING ANY CLEAN-UP SO AS TO NOT DELAY THE PERALTA AVE CONCRETE BICYCLE TRACK. NO ADDITIONAL WORK ON THE OHLONE PROJECT SHOULD OCCUR UNTIL THE RECENTLY BEGUN UPDATE OF THE 2017 BICYCLE PLAN HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND APPROVED. Hello Berkeley Mayor& City Council Members, The Signal Oil Station & Texaco Gas Station closed many years before underground storage tank removal and soil and ground water remediation were required. We can find no record that the underground tanks were ever removed or that the site was ever cleaned up. A CEQA Initial Study leading to a Focused EIR is needed for the Oh lone Project, at least in part to determine the condition of underground fuel and solvent storage tanks, and the presence in the soil and ground & water of benzene, lead, motor oil, solvents, and other by- products of the operation of a gasoline & auto repair station. And a remediation plan would need to be prepared and implemented. No additional work nor any approval of the Ohlone Greenway Plan should occur until the underground storage tanks at the former Hopkins Peralta gas station site are removed and a thorough soil remediation process is completed. - In the past, the City has been very vigilant in making sure that property owners thoroughly cleaned up sites that had been gas & auto service stations, and made sure that all underground storage tanks were removed. CUMULATIVE IMPACT ANALYSIS OF LOSS OF STREET PARKING NEEDED The Ohlone Project would result in the loss of 12 or more street parking spaces on the east side of Peralta Ave, so as to make way for a two-way exclusive bicycle track. Parking would also be removed on Hopkins and Rose streets. The City of Berkeley, Diablo Engineering, & the sub- contractors have failed to provide any analysis of the loss of these parking spaces to the neighborhood, combined with the additional demand for parking and the further significant projected loss of parking spaces from recent and planned projects: WHY ARE RECKLESS BICYCLISTS, ELECTRIC BICYCLISTS & ELECTRIC SCOOTER RIDERS TOLERATED? Bicyclists, electric bicycle riders, & electric scooter riders are getting more and more reckless. They routinely run stop signs and stop lights, pass pedestrians way too close & on the right, and overtly knock into pedestrians. It's time to strictly enforce all traffic laws against bicyclists and scooter riders. Electric scooters & electric bicycles should NOT be on sidewalks or in bicycle lanes. All motorized vehicles belong in the street. Electric scooter riders should be licensed and at least 18. It makes no sense to exempt them from the rules of the road. Diablo Engineering, Fehr and Peers, and the City of Berkeley are ignoring the new reality of reckless bicycle, e-bicycle, & e-scooter riders. So-called shared pathways between pedestrians & bicyclists & electric vehicle users do not work, & put pedestrians, including people using wheel chairs & other mobility aides, & people pushing baby carriages at great risk. Pedestrians on the Ohlone Pathway have to continually look over their shoulder to make sure bicyclists or electric vehicle riders are not a bout to knock them over.
