Our new HVAC system has a smart thermostat — and as someone who's always lived in old, low-tech houses, I am perplexed! What do you MEAN my thermostat can be controlled by an app. Heat should be doled out by a weird little 100-year-old metal dial that your dad only lets you click on once a week!

I think everybody at NPR is glad our Susan Stamberg left us an advance obit for Frank Gehry. A legend on a legend.
Frank Gehry, whose designs defied gravity and convention, dies at 96
Gehry transformed modern architecture with exuberant buildings such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Museum. "I've always been for optimism and architecture not being sad," he said.

NPR fights Trump's executive order against public media

The case isn't getting much attention.

But it pits the press's right not to face government retaliation over coverage against the president's assertion of vast executive powers

The only upside to my apartment's HVAC being out of commission until the beginning of December is that we have not seen our electric bill skyrocket yet -- but not looking forward to it!
If your electric bill has seemed higher than usual lately, it’s not in your head.

Here’s why — and what types of support are available:
Why are electricity rates so high in D.C.?
A new auction just set the highest power price in nearly a decade. Here’s what that means for Pepco customers in D.C.

Detransition is being used as political fodder by the Trump admin and its allies to support extreme anti-trans policies.

In the process, the reality of detransition is lost. For our new series, I spoke with detransitioners who feel harmed by the Trump admin. Their stories are complex and important.
Detransition is key to politicians’ anti-trans agenda. But what is it really like?
The 19th spoke with two detransitioners who feel harmed and used by the Trump administration, which has positioned itself as a protector of those who detransition.
