Papan is a near-forgotten tin-mining town in Perak, Malaysia, once bustling with traders and miners but now left in decay. Known for its historic shophouses, colonial ruins, and Sybil Kathigasu’s WWII resistance story, the town also carries the dark legacy of the Asian Rare Earth (ARE) radioactive waste scandal from the 1980s. Despite its rich history, Papan remains neglected, with only a handful of residents keeping its memory alive as nature slowly reclaims its abandoned structures.
