It's one of the Alumina ceramics - I think Violet Fused Alumina - with a few extra metals added in for some reason - titanium, zinc and chromium and probably whatever else helped it do magical Materials Science stuff :)

I have a pic floating around of three signage folk scratching their heads over a 20ft sign half installed that says “YOUR FOURING EXPERTS” because of a last minute change to a sign that said “CITYNAME FLOORING EXPERTS”
