Snow! We have a tiny bit of persistent snow today as well (on Lake Superior's south shore).

A Mexican jay in a silver-leaf oak. Mexican jays are always yakking about in the oaks here in the Chiricahuas. Multi-block print plus 4 color reduction for the jay.
October 23, 2025 at 5:03 PM
Pencil sketches of Mexican jays for tomorrow's linocut (only 10 more days of this residency, alas! There are so many things to carve in the high desert).

The attack on science in this Big Brutal Bill is horrific: 56% cut to NSF; 73% cut to grad student fellowships; 39% cut to USGS; 100% cut to ecosystem sciences; etc etc. From today's Guardian.

It's Monday! So time for another #printPromptMonday, this time with the prompt #Earth. Here's some raw earth revealed as a glacier retreats in #Svalbard (with a #reindeer trotting in front of the glacer, since reindeer in the Arctic are what I research). #linocut #printsky #climateart

Happy Easter to all who celebrate, including perhaps this #barredowl in the apple trees along #LakeSuperior (we still have lots of snow in the woods, but the owls are beginning to call. Yesterday there were dozens of yellowlegs in the flooding river plain. #reductionlinocut #printmaking #PrintSky

For #PrintPromptMonday #FavouritePiece my favourite print may be last April’s northern gannets over Skrudar Island, Iceland. #linocut #reductionprint #birdsinart

Another #reindeer portrait for my book in progress, Reindeer on the Run. She’s from Iceland. Reindeer eyes are extraordinary.

#PrintPromptMonday #friends I’ve not been able to carve or print the last 3 weeks cuz of autoimmune flares. (Plus political despair). But here are two raven friends from last winter. Love seeing all your prints

#printPromptMonday theme was #magic. As a scientist, believe magic lies in the astounding interconnections of wildness. Here’s a bowhead whale and her calf, whose songs fill the Arctic Ocean.

I love winter too. But here’s today’s 2meter snow drift and our spring scene along Lake Superior. Maybe we can have a tiny break from winter once April begins??

For #printpromptmonday here is a little #foliage: pine siskins foraging in last year’s coneflowers in the garden. We got another foot of snow this weekend, so siskins are a joy. Fabriano Rosapina, Caligo Safewash. #linocut #printmaking #readyForSpring

For #printpromptmonday, here's an #inprogress series of images from my Jan 2025 reduction print of a Whooping Swan: 1) the drawing & lino showing the drawing transferred and 1st layer carved; 2) layer 4 (dark gray) drying; 3) final swan.

Welcome! Linocut printmaker here. I joined Bluesky about 6 weeks ago. I’m also a retired ecology prof still working in the Arctic

Trumpeter swan flying over Point of View preserve, #KeweenawLandTrust on #LakeSuperior. Trumpeters were once extinct in the #GreatLakes of the US, but a successful federal program has helped them return. (Federal conservation works! It now needs your support). #linocut #reductionprint

This is a wretched day for America, but at least I have a tiny bit of good news: my reduction linocut print "Northern Gannets in Iceland" has made it through the first round of cuts in the #JacksonsArtPrize. Small mercies.
