You can build your own air filters to clean smoke or viral contaminants: Corsi-Rosenthal Box

The four filters are taped in place as the walls of the box, their airflow arrows pointed inward, the fan is taped on top with its cardboard shroud helping to block air leaks. The joins and the rest of the box are taped well to prevent small openings for air leakage so air travels in through the filters to be cleaned and out through the room.

Once upon a time, I led the FEMA program to teach Community Emergency Response Teams in my county. The idea was to teach people who could both be more prepared and also lead their neighbors in an emergency until more help arrived. The first step in emergency response is emergency preparedness. 1)
