Elian and Harlow had come their closest to losing everything the last time they’d dealt with a family.

This time, Elian would be sure hers came out unscathed.

No matter what she had to do along the way for that to be the case.

Any other adversary would have been easy to ignore. Easy to deal with.

But a mafia was almost always likened to a family. And a family generally meant a network of dangerous connections. Everything was harder. Took longer. Cut deeper.

Sometimes love meant distance. Patience. She knew Glen was giving her a lot of that right now while she tried to find someplace that she could regain control.

Because right now, love meant protection.

It went hand in hand with the lesson Glen had given her when she’d been worrying over Neo’s ascension. There were all kinds of ways to protect and love the people around her, and very few of them meant centering herself and her feelings when it came to their lives and their actions.

Elian pressed her lips together on the urge to argue. Much as she wanted to defend Harlow in all things, she was learning that that wasn’t always helpful. That love didn’t always mean unconditional cop outs. Sometimes it meant accountability. Helping someone grow and be better.

“Not yet,” Harlow said with a shake of her head. “She’s at work.”

Elian frowned. “But she’s closed on Mondays.”

“Yeah—she’s studying. Gonna finish the GED I ruined for her.”
January 8, 2026 at 5:07 PM
Harlow laughed through her nose. “If you say so.”

“Shouldn’t you be focusing on your stuff?” Elian said, waving a hand at the papers on Harlow’s lap. “Where’s Dana? Want me to quiz you?”
January 8, 2026 at 4:30 PM
“You sent Vincent’s ex booty call to watch his girlfriend?” Harlow asked as she flipped through the study guide Dana had made for her.

“They get along!” Elian defended. “They hung out a whole bunch the day we moved in here!”

Then, because that didn’t feel like enough, she told Danika to watch Ada herself. There was no way Elian was going to be caught unaware, wound tight as she was these days. Ada needed the protection much more.

And even though Yui had assured Elian that it was not her receptionist, Elian put a watch detail on Vincent anyway. Sent Uncle Kento a text suggesting more security because of increased unhinged fan behavior. Encouraged him to arrange something for Ada, too.

Her entire gang now knew they were under surveillance. Everyone, top to bottom, understood why the eyes were there and whose they were. If at any point things escalated past silent watching, they knew who to report to.

The more of it passed, the more Elian found herself needing to 𝘥𝘰 something. Even if she had no idea if it was actually beneficial in some way. Even if it was all to cover up just how powerless she was for now—until the mafia made their move.

Time was anxiety’s favorite meal.

“Can your crime family adopt me instead?” Elian whispered. “Tell them I speak the language and everything.”

Yui laughed. “Maybe if we get an opening. With some of the infighting we’ve been dealing with, I wouldn’t be too surprised.”
January 7, 2026 at 6:30 PM
Yui smiled. “They likely would, if I weren’t spoken for in Komorebi. I have my own hierarchy I fit into—just because I live abroad doesn’t mean I leave that behind. To try to recruit me would be to start problems with everyone standing behind and beside me, and no one wants that.”
January 7, 2026 at 6:15 PM
Elian frowned. “Are you…you’re not—”

“No,” Yui interrupted with a shake of her head.

“Why? You’re much more established and well connected than me, so why not go for someone like you instead?”
January 7, 2026 at 6:05 PM
“Do you know which?” she asked sometime after Yui had ordered several rolls for them.

“They’d like to recruit you,” Yui said nonchalantly. “Recon is underway so they have an idea of what they stand to gain through you and how cooperative you may be.”
January 7, 2026 at 5:48 PM
Elian rubbed her temples, trying to think, but her thoughts couldn’t find their way around the shock. She’d never done anything to attract this kind of attention because she didn’t 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 this kind of attention. The only person she was interested in sharing with was Harlow.
January 7, 2026 at 5:32 PM
“The 𝘮𝘢𝘧𝘪𝘢?!” Elian squawked as loudly as she dared to in public. “For what reason?! What have we done to attract that kind of attention?!”

“You’re good at your job,” Yui shrugged. “At a certain point, that could either be an asset or a threat to them.”
January 7, 2026 at 5:21 PM
Yui’s stare turned withering. “How many times must we have this conversation?” she sighed. “The watcher himself is Hawthorne Fall. But the people he works for—the highest profile criminal empire in the city. Del Sol Valley’s top mafia family.”
January 7, 2026 at 5:02 PM
Elian had only barely gotten started on her pout when Yui reached across the table for her hand. “How about I tell you who’s been watching your people as a consolation prize?”

“You 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸?!”
January 7, 2026 at 4:45 PM
“But if I knew who she was, I’d be able to get a much more definitive answer to that much faster.”

“I’m sorry, Elian, but I choose my employees in part because of their discretion and anonymity. I would be a fool to compromise that which I deliberately sought out.”
January 7, 2026 at 4:32 PM
Yui cocked her head. “Whether your reason is good or not would need to be up to my discretion, anata. Nani ga okotte iru?”

“Nothing,” Elian said a little too quickly. “Yet. Maybe at all.”
January 7, 2026 at 4:18 PM
“Your receptionist with the red hair,” Elian said, hands smoothing the napkin she laid in her lap, “what’s her name?”

“Elian,” Yui tsked good-naturedly. “Come now.”

“I know. But I also know you know I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t have a good reason.”
January 7, 2026 at 4:08 PM
“For the record,” Elian began, “I don’t think you’re going to tell me the answer. My expectations are entirely rooted in reality.”

Yui chuckled. “Alright.”
