I worked soul-sucking tech jobs at big companies and hated it. Eventually I started doing hobby game dev, attending Bay Area (where I moved for work) game dev groups.
In the end it was a friend of a friend's boyfriend that was hiring programmers for their new studio. That was my foot in the door!
