Progress shot! Done with he first round of 400 grit sanding for this teapot. I’ll continue up to 1500 grit and then, once I can’t feel any more rough areas and the mold seams are as invisible as I can make them, she’s done! I want smooth, not glossy. More stone than glass.

Unglazed black porcelain shows the history of this mug, from the slip that wasn’t mixed well to where the handle separated when I opened the mold, and more. Every mistake.

I can’t show you how she feels in the hand, but if you’ve ever picked up a stone from a river bed, you can imagine.

All in all I think this first firing was a success. Now, we pay the cost of success in sanding. So much sanding.

Hopeful first look! The cup with the red glaze has some weird issues but the others may be ok! Can’t tell yet if tea pot lids will fit. Gotta wait for it all to cool down a few hundred more degrees. Pottery is a harsh but extremely hot mistress

Will this last year of design and mold building amount to anything? Soon we find out. Wish me luck, pottery friends

Modeled. Printed. Primed. Sanded. Sealed. Next up: mold release, then plaster! Then someday, a teapot

Printing part of the case mold for a new version of a cup. My workspace is unheated, so winter is the time for design and prep. Once it warms up a little, this mold (and others) will be primed, sanded, sealed, and cast in plaster to make molds for slip casting

Sneak preview of part of the case mold for next year’s teapot. Check back in 8 months or so to see if it turns into anything

Pretty happy with this one. I wish the lid fit more cleanly. And there are ergonomic issues with the lid and with pouring, so the design needs another revision and I need more practice executing. But she didn’t explode or slump or warp or get stuck together, and the glaze actually looks decent!

Once again pottery friends I am asking for your good thoughts

Mugs from the glaze kiln. Pottery is very frustrating sometimes; each of these has a serious flaw. One might be correctable with a little sandpaper. We’ll see

Porcelain vases from the glaze kiln. These were thrown years ago, glazed yesterday. Pottery is sometimes slow and then other times, somewhat less slow

Since I’m apparently not anxious enough already I just committed my first 3 teapots and a bunch of other new work to the (electric) flames. Pottery, it’s a risky bisqueness

Another “almost” from the latest glaze kiln. (Cleverly chosen photo angle hides the lip, which is uneven enough to make you seasick if you look at it in a cupboard next to other cups)

2nd cast of the big teapot mold! This time, she has a little hat!

I made this and I’m almost happy with it!

She was. And happy and loved. We just had some more snow this week and it hurts to see it lying in the yard untouched. But I’m glad we had some in February also, and she got to play in it one last time.
