1:40 is plenty of time for the layover but I don't know that I'd want to have to check bags with the pressure of the international connection. Too many variables for me but YMMV.

Can you check your bags through from France to the US? That would be the best bet.
Schipol is a big airport. If you arrive at an outer gate it can take 10-15 minutes to get to the exit. Then you have to find the check in counter and bag drop, then clear security again, then passport control.
