basically yeah. to get coast to coast, your traffic is routed through a bunch of intermediary devices, all of which take a ms or two to look at their routing table, figure out where your traffic is headed, and relay it out the correct interface.

depends what you're using the datacenter for. latency is a thing that matters for some applications, and it gets higher the farther away you are from the datacenter. for example, i get like 10ms latency to the Steam servers on the west coast, and like 120-150ms latency to any east coast server.
