Old fart doing bits and pieces on The West Coast.
Well the rugby was disappointing.
Maybe some golf in this will cheer me up. #TheWestCoast

But!!!! The 'x marks the spot' is a bit annoying.🤣

It's so lovely to have these wee tauhou feeding outside the kitchen window.

Bit of pity about the 'calling cards' they leave!!🤣

I think the wee tauhou quite like the meal cakes. (A number 'waiting in the wings' for a turn!)

Close to #HoleInOne #5 (Underclubbed maybe?🤣)

The streets of #Greymouth are paved with gold.

Yep, def worthwhile. Agree?😄

But it's all worthwhile. A little bit of plaiting of cord, string the piece, then the nice binding to finish. Yes, it's all worthwhile in the end I reckon.

Bleurgh . . . the really 'fun stuff'. Sanding. (And sanding, and sanding and sanding.) Production level warrants tumblers but in my case it's all hand sanded with various grades of diamond cloth. Start with about 200 grit, then 400, then 800 and finally with 1200.
September 28, 2023 at 10:25 PM
Then a couple of small but important details - suspension hole and binding nicks to aid the penultimate step (but that comes in a while . . . quite a while.) They do look quite uninteresting don't they?
September 28, 2023 at 10:24 PM
. . . is a bit wet and messy with the blanks taken to the diamond sanding wheel to reduce the raw blank to the final shape you want.
September 28, 2023 at 10:24 PM
Still with the saw, further reducing the kohatu slab to smaller blanks of the basic shape and size to then start the shaping of whatever is planned. (In this case a couple of toki.) It's ok, the next step . . .
September 28, 2023 at 10:22 PM
The next 'step' is the noisy, wet and long one with slab cutting on a diamond blade saw. The fun thing about this is discovering what the stone actually contains given the oxidation over the years often disguises the heart with unspectacular rind.

OK . . . a wee journey that was well received 'over there'. (Bear with me.) It's a journey of many variable steps and one that really can't be hurried. Hardly surprising when it starts with a bit of fossicking in a West Coast awa looking for something similar to these.

Lovely evening on #TheWestCoast

And now I have an inundation of tui!! (I think most was 7!)

And then there were none!🤣

Big old kereru lunching in the kowhai outside our lounge with a beautiful wee korimako keeping it company (while 2 tui argue with with each other in the kowhai behind.) Wonderful time of the year (despite the fact that it's persisting down!!)
