that may be true, but separating the two things like that may be a little idealistic; in practice, in a patriarchal culture, with plenty of toxic masculinity around, it all gets mixed together.

Born 1956. My father assumed I'd have to fight, as his father had and his father before him. Basic to raising a son that you taught him how to fight, to be tough; practical lessons, how to punch, fight with a knife. Many of my UK peers had this.

My father being, as he saw it, conscientious.

the one on the right has a build and gait reminiscent of Prince William (apologies for Brit perspective) ..

but the fact that he's carrying his own bag immediately rules out that possibility

strange sense of dislocation, seeing this. I'm in the NE of Scotland, Montrose, where we have eider. Shouldn't be a surprise to see the same species, so familiar here, in such a distant location, but somehow it is.

I've followed so many articles about authoritarianism, White Christian Nationalism, fascism .. and I'm beginning to wonder if what we're watching isn't at root, the triumph of psychopathy.

no ... we should be told that the future announcement about the budget is going to happen after the budget *preview*.

Have we not yet reachced the theoretical limits to how many pre-announcements, or announcements of coming pre-announcements can be made?

as in the UK, where the Govt's clampdown on free speech has led to older people leading the protests because they know younger folk have too much to lose. Plus they know that people in wheelchairs (yes, this regularly happens) being hauled into police vans makes more news than kids being arrested.

Use a vessel tracker and watch the traffic through the Bosphorus. It'll tell you a lot about the reality of the 'embargo'.

last few years I've spent weeks in Istanbul in an apt overlooking the roads in the Sea of Marmara where ships wait to sail through the Bosphorus. I started using a vessel tracker. Let's just say it's illuminating. Sadly.

I've no idea what the white thing is but the image is stunning.

Yep.

Thank you for this. Yes, 40 (+) years - hard to walk away from. But the tragedy is your 'always' .. that this stuff is so common now. There's some comfort from knowing that many others are going through it, but in the nature of things we're isolated from each other.

interesting because John uses a classical Greek rather than Hebraic idea (cf. logos) but also because 'truth' is such a poor translation, allowing the 'but I didn't tell a lie' aspect but skipping the 'I wasn't transparent, I lied by evasion' aspect.

yes, ignorance can be wilful. I've been struck, trying to tackle this stuff, by the use of aletheia, for truth, in John 1, (the 'full of grace and truth' bit).

In classical use, aside the mythic river, people were said to 'have drunk too deep of the waters of Lethe' when they deliberately 'forgot'.
