Moss. The Kepler Track is in a very wet part of the motu. It starts low, goes up through the treeline to alpine slopes where's it's mostly lichens and the wind can throw you over the side gusting to 130km, or maybe a blizzard, like the last time I walked it! A WONderful adventure every time.

Looks like a lichen. Spanish Moss is the stuff that hangs from trees in the southern states *and other places*. Looks like this, and can grow in massive clumps. When I was a kid we called it 'gorilla snot'.😆

Today I was going to offer up, not moss, not lichen but a fern.....couldn't find it but found this MARvellous stuff.
A lichen - possibly another growth stage of what I thought were tiny fungi the other day...??

It IS a lichen and a friend who specialised in liverworts may have been the only one to appreciate the poor joke - the wonderful Dr Elizabeth Brown.

It's a little over-exposed cos it's sometimes like the inside of a cow in our deepest, wettest bush. But hey, if you're a MOSS it's heaven! *Bush is often forest here, we just say bush if there are not many massively high trees*
