Trying this new thing out, and plugging my writing. Might also post some other fun things- we'll see how it goes.
Danzanryu's Yawara board ends into a transition into the later Shime no kata board, and by way of that, a throw that's not on the Nage board.

Hagai shime is where we start defending punches with grappling. A block into a full nelson is a good start, and that can be expanded upon later.

Let's finish up a look at Danzanryu's Yawara board with a couple fun ones.

This is kubi nuki shime- an escape from a headlock. We use strikes to loosen the grip as the hands are very vulnerable here. Then we use momentum to position then for an arm lock, and a strike to finish.

Why do I do martial arts? Many reasons. I have fun at it. But I started initially to try and regain power taken from me by bullies.

When we moved to a little town called Godley, TX, I was going to start 1st grade. My single mom was working in Ft. Worth, over an hour drive away. She needed

I also practice the bo- the rokushakubo. The one I have for training is a beast of a staff. It's about double the usual diameter, thus making it a workout to swing clean. That's the goal. Doing this kata while I was hurting from surgeries, you can see me going slow and easy, but it helped.

UTA in the '80's had a vibrant foreign student community. My mother ended up making friends with a lovely lady down the block named Fatima. She is Iranian. I remember her son, Zephyr, who was maybe a year younger than me. We got along pretty well. He was a pretty cool kid.

I do not remember

Kenpo Orange belt has our first defense against kicks, which remain so for a while. But front kicks are prevalent, and easily countered if countered correctly, so it's a good one to practice. Note that this is versus a kick to the abdomen, any lower, and you counter by position without a block.

Kenpo techniques are a little arbitrary as to which belt they go under. Some techniques are definitely beginner level, and some could go any number of places. Here is a defense versus grappling that is in Orange belt, but could be anywhere. Japanese Strangehold uses strikes to get out of a choke.

College Street had a vibrant little mixed community on it. UTA in the '80's had a pretty good international student comunity, which carries forward to today. Iranians, Syrians, Israelis, and Americans, all just trying to pass classes.

But because the university housing was in older houses, with

This is from the elbow, but you can see that any grip along the arm is a candidate for this technique. That's the idea- we learn an ideal, then work alterations and substitutions to learn how the flow of techniques blends together.

Also, this move really, really hurts. A lot.

Tedori jujitsu tries to put the common grips from common facing all in yellow belt- so we get single straight grabs, cross grabs, double grabs, etc. Now in Tip 5, we do grabs from the side. Tehy don't differ greatly from being grabbed in front, but we have better angles of attack here.

Some babble as infants, and their words come easily as little bits- mama, dad, cookie, single words. Some kids don't talk but listen constantly, then start just yammering out small sentences.

There's a joke about a little German boy with the punchline, "Until now, everything was satisfactory."

Living in the Roach Dump on College Street meant that the neighbors were all university students, as well. As happens in school, things like parties and get-togethers were not uncommon occurrences.

I learned about the aftermath of parties pretty early on. The detritus could be hazardous.

The next throw from a rear bearhug in Jukoryu's Green belt is an oldie but a goodie. Sukui nage- the scoop throw. It's in the judo syllabus, but was out of competition for about 15 years or so. Now it and other leg grab throws are making their way back, so this may not seem so exotic. Fun throw.

Jukoryu jujitsu puts an awful lot into its first belt (green belt)- ending with bearhug defenses. The first we also see in other styles because the classic seoi nage (back carry throw) is made for this. Here we do a drop seoi nage because it's easier for beginners.

Living in the Roach Dump, we did have some appliances, including a washing machine. No dryer, or microwave. My mom hung clothes out on the line or on a folding rack inside to dry.

One day, the washing machine broke. We were living on $25 a week for food- there was no money to fix or buy new.

After my mother divorced my father, she tried dating in college, though not super frequently. One guy I do remember, though, is John the Beard. That's what we called him.

John the Beard (aka John the Weird according to my mom) was indeed a weird fellow, with questionable sanitation habits.

We already had a collar grab technique in Yawara, with a cross grip. This one, ryoeri tori, is from a straight grip. It uses a pressure point, not to finish anything, but to distract and move the opponent until a good grip can be taken to create pain and submission. Or if that fails, a strike.

Danzanryu jujitsu's Yawara list is long, but we'll skip a bit to one of the perennial favorites. Imon Tori means insignia technique- think of someone wearing a House isignia on their chest. That is where the opponent is pushing. We accept the push to bait them into pushing harder. Then *boom*.

Living at the Roach Dump was always an adventure. My mother divorced my father for abuse, and still had to complete her degree. My Granny did a lot of watching me and my brother when daycare wasn't in session.

One year, I got a Dukes of Hazzard Big Wheels, maybe for a birthday?

We also train the jo, a weapon for peace time vs. war. It's handy to know how to swing a longer stick around, which gives an advantage when facing a longer weapon (like a sword). However, it's short enough to carry easily as a walking stick, and remain maneuverable. This kata is widely practiced.
October 6, 2025 at 6:19 PM
We train more weapons than just the hanbo. This is the bokken- which can be a weapon on its own. This is happo giri (ichi kata)- a form of 8-direction cut. There are other versions of happo giri around, but this one focuses on directional facing. From here, you could make different strikes.

The Roach Dump was not far from the UTA campus, and a branch off Johnson Creek runs right through it. During a dry spell, my father decided he could catch a bunch of crawdads in the pooled creek, and have a free crawfish boil.

Never mind he knew nothing about how to boil crawfish. It was free.

But how poor were you growing up?

The first place I can remember living in we called "The Roach Dump". I can remember back to shortly before I was speaking, so it was very early on.

The Roach Dump was university housing, on a street of university-owned houses.
