Even though writing during holidays is damn near impossible for me, I managed to do it. Still needs editing, but this was one of my favorite scenes #booksky #writesky
I trot to my post for today in the hall, in the corner comprising the intersection of the science and art classrooms. Even though I’m not a teacher, I don’t mind doing this every other period. It’s a good way to be more available to the students. I’ve had a few positive conversations just being seen while the kids circulate on the way to class. Usually, I don’t have to intervene in any way. Today is one of those rare times I do. I’m waving back to Bree, one of the Media Club kids, when I spot a few lanky jock-type students crowding around a much shorter, bespectacled one. The tall students seemed to have that air of menacing cheer that precedes a round of Shove the Nerd, but I try not to judge a book by it’s cover. Then they started shoving the nerd. “Hey!” I call, bustling up to them sternly. “Aye, now, don’t try to run off, you caught.” I close in on them, the aggressors shifting uncomfortably. “Doing some good old fashioned bullying, huh? What’s your name, Specs?” The boy pushes his glasses up his nose and says, “Avery.” “Nice to meet you, Avery.” I look back up at the athletic boys. “We live in a open carry state. The security guard let anybody from the pizza delivery man to his mama’s uncle’s cousin’s play sister in here. Avery could decide to shoot the school up tomorrow, and then what? You gonna be happy you fucked with ‘em when he bring the glock to PE?” Two of the boys cast doubtful glances at each other. The one with the thickest neck looks down at Avery with a scowl. “He’ ain’t gon’ shoot shit up,” he says. “Greg, you watch your mouth,” Mr. Shawn’s baritone sounds from behind me. I turn and he’s walking away from a gathering of male teachers close to his classroom door. “But she cussed!” Thick Neck cries indignantly. I look at Mr. Shawn and shake my head in smooth denial. “He must’ve misheard me,” I lie, feigning confusion at the boy.
