The cheapest I could find for an infant in DC IS $2400/mo. KinderCare was $3200/mo. These are just keep your kid alive and teach them the basics daycares; not some Montessori/Waldorf specialities.

Also noting, looking through that thread and this one, the majority of people pushing back appear to be male. Women shoulder the load of parenting, even in two-parent households. Outsourcing childcare and other necessities reduces that load and improves the quality of life for women, but costs more.

This is all to say that in a metro area $136k a year for a family of 4 may not be dire poverty level, but it isn’t living a lavish lifestyle. We should want everyone to be able to have the basic necessities. Suitable housing, food, reliable transportation. We don’t have to inflict suffering.

My rent in DC is around $36k/yr and I’m paying way under market for my place. I save on transportation because I own my car, work from home, have a lot within walking distance, and am near public transport. My company pays 100% of my insurance premium, but if they didn’t it would be about $1200/mo.
