… to recreate and manifest their traumas over and over again in the minds of people. Quite literally using magic/power of the tongue to perpetuate evil that was once buried in the past. Slam speaks so much death into the present while not even taking a chance to imagine the future

We’ve never been taught how to listen—to others or ourselves. We focus too much on being heard, not saying something worth being understood.

The issue comes as a result of no one expressing a level of curiosity in the work that is able to poke holes in the plot. I feel the lack of curiosity is a result of us culturally pulling away from oratory traditions.

Two words, Button Poetry. It’s not entirely their fault, but I do think they tapped into a flawed ecosystem and turned the faucet on full blast.

Performance sorta necessitates validation, & when you’re validated for performing vulnerability, it’s addictive. People make you feel good for hurting…

I don’t blame you at all bruh. 😔 the scene has devolved into trauma porn and aimless prose. It helps no one, not even themselves.

And what’s worst is, they have younger poets looking up to them asking how to do what they do, and their only advice is… “exploit your trauma more” 😕

On top of that, there’s a poisonous trend of revealing without healing. Poets love making others and themselves cry but never offer any healing in the process.
