The opening paragraph of Tuck Everlasting remains my all-time favorite passages in literature to introduce to and discuss with students. In 1 pge, Babbitt throws us into the natural world w/ the changing seasons. We see the month of August like a giant ferris wheel, “at the very top of summer.”

What do playing with toddlers and almost becoming a professional clown have to do with teaching? They remind me of why I fell in love with teaching. #TeacherSky #EduSky #SubstackSky

Reading is a huge part of my life. For two years, I've been recommending books and resources that help me grow as a teacher. If you are looking for a one-stop shop, here is my ever-growing Bookshop.org recommended reading list. #TeacherSky

To involve parents, I ask,

Do you have anything to offer our classroom that will help us explore our community? Do you have a cultural celebration, occupation, or talent that would contribute to our class discussions this year?

It's a great way to include their expertise. #EdChat #EduSky

Yes! Reading @biblioracle.bsky.social Why They Can't Write: Killing the Five-Paragraph Essay and Other Necessities completely changed how I view academic writing.

We spent this week reading Jacqueline Woodson’s incredible short story, “Main Street.” After our classroom discussion about empathy, friendship, and racism, a student decided to make a sign for our classroom community bulletin board. #TeacherSky

After introducing Brené Brown’s BRAVING Inventory to my fifth-graders, they created mindmaps for each element asking, “What does this look/sound like in our classroom?” They were so pleased with the results, they wanted to create a bulletin board for how we build trust in our classroom! #TeacherSky

The biggest challenge I face as a 20+ year veteran teacher is balancing hubris with humility. Humility leads to curiosity, pushing my pedagogical growth. I don’t want my experience leading to stagnant arrogance. I want to find and hold onto a self-assured humility that keeps me engaged. #TeacherSky

Since being introduced last year to “Sticks” by George Saunders, I’ve read and reread this short story a number of times. Today, my fifth-graders shared an epiphany that blew my mind! One I had not ever considered before. #TeacherSky

How are you seen at school? How would you like to be seen and school?

This quick exit ticket during the first week of school ALWAYS gives me such important information about my students. It's worth asking (and reflecting about) every time. #TeacherSky

Last year, I asked, “What if I taught literacy to my my fifth-grade like an AP course?”

This year, I’m starting with Marisa Thompson’s TQE Method and teaching my students how to Read Like an Octopus, care of @marcusluther.bsky.social. #TeacherSky

The Sticky Thoughts poster I copied from @marcusluther.bsky.social made for a great exit ticket for my fifth-graders.

How would you rate your first official day of school? #TeacherSky

I received lots of great feedback!
