As the lucky recipient of a proof copy of Jennie Godfrey's new book The Barbecue at No. 9 I am able to share a spoiler free review of a book that will take its readers by storm when it is released in February 2026.
The Barbecue at No. 9 By Jennie Godfrey
Welcome to my review of my favourite book of 2026! No, that isn't a typo. I have been lucky enough to be sent a proof copy of Jennie Godfrey's second novel, The Barbecue at No. 9, which will be released in February 2026, and I find it almost inconceivable that I will read anything better in the whole of next year.

The Changing Face of Physical Fitness
What are your favorite physical activities or exercises? When I look back on my journey through exercise, I realise that there has never been a type of activity that has been consistent apart from walking. As a child, I found physical activities like sports very challenging due to my dyspraxia. I was forced to think about every movement and for that reason nothing was natural and easy.

What is something others do that sparks your admiration? I have always been envious of people with a clear sense of purpose and destiny. That becomes admiration when these people use that sense to make the lives of others better. Philanthropy in its Victorian incarnation…
A Focus on Philanthropy
What is something others do that sparks your admiration? I have always been envious of people with a clear sense of purpose and destiny. That becomes admiration when these people use that sense to make the lives of others better. Philanthropy in its Victorian incarnation has all but disappeared in our modern world where people in power, political or financial, only wish to make their own lives better.

What's your favorite cartoon? Over 50 years ago, one of the most accomplished cartoon films ever made was released. Initially it was a made for television presentation but it was given a small scale cinema release to make it eligible for an Oscar nomination. Not only did it get nominated, it very deservedly won. The film industry was angry that a mere television cartoon had beaten the best that they had to offer.

A very particular readership is in evidence for this 1986 edition of The Field. Find out how that affects the content of yet another fascinating Christmas Magazine.
Christmas Magazines Through The Years The Field Christmas Number 1986
What was 1986 like? Queen Elizabeth II was in the 34th year of her reign and Margaret Thatcher was in the seventh year of hers. As with most of the preceding years of the 1980s, politics appeared to be on fast forward, though looking back it seems like a decade of relatively slow, thoughtful politics in comparison to the 2010s and 2020s.

What could you do less of? The one thing I could do far less of is worry. For those who don't know, the title is a nod to the tagline for the American soft drink. The adverts follow a series of catastrophic events that ensue after someone decides to drink Dr Pepper's. The adverts end with 'Dr Pepper's, what's the worst that could happen?' after the final disaster.

The Illustrated London News gives us a fascinating and invaluable insight into how the other half lived 50 years ago. It is definitely the most fascinating magazine that I read during my research.
Christmas Magazines Through The Years The Illustrated London News Christmas Number 1975
What was 1975 like? In the 23rd year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign her Prime Minister was Harold Wilson. On the Conservative side, Ted Heath, who Wilson had beaten twice in February and October 1974 was forced from the leadership of the party after a challenge by Margaret Thatcher. The 'big beasts' were much in evidence in the second round of the contest, expecting Thatcher's tilt at the crown to run out of steam, but she reaped the benefit from her performance in the first round to secure the party leadership and become the first female leader of a major UK political party.

This 1970 magazine is, in terms of social history, the most interesting of the lot so far. See how Woman's Realm foresaw a new age for women and laid down some markers for it.
Christmas Magazines Through The Years Woman’s Realm 1970
What was 1970 like? The 18th year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign featured a general election in June that neatly split the political year into two halves. For the first half of the year Harold Wilson led his Labour Government with a very thin majority. Despite this, they were able to pass the bill reducing the Age of Majority, the legal definition of adulthood in effect, from 21 to 18 for the most purposes.

Do you ever see wild animals? I see wild animals all the time as the news is always about the wildest ones. Humans are wild animals, not a favoured creation. Humans are the wild animals, because they are the only ones to deliberately destroy their environment. Humans are the only species, as far as we know, who have evolved beyond the point of stability, both environmental and psychological.

Do you have a favorite place you have visited? Where is it? I think favourite places are attached to a time rather than a geographical location. My immediate answer was Sydney, but on thinking about it more carefully I would say Sydney 2004 would be more accurate. That year was anything but straightforward but as a family we lived in the suburbs of Sydney as locals would.

We look at Christmas from 60 years ago and it turns out to have a surprising number of similarities along with the inevitable differences.
Christmas Magazines Through The Years Woman’s Own Christmas Annual 1965
What was 1965 like? It was the 13th year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, and the year she saw the death of her first Prime Minister, the legendary Winston Churchill, in January. A third of a million people filed past his coffin when he lay in state for three days. Her Prime Minister throughout the year was Harold Wilson, the first Labour Prime Minister since Clement Atlee.

What is one thing you would change about yourself? I have always been a pessimistic person. It is something hard wired into my brain by both genetics and upbringing. My Dad was a very pessimistic person and he always looked at other human beings from the point of view that they were likely to be flawed in many ways. One of my favourite sweatshirts was bought for me by my son and the front reads 'People Ruin Everything'!!

My magazine project arrives in 1950. World War II may be over, but ratioing is still in force as the country slowly recovers from the aftermath of the conflict.
Christmas Magazines Through The Years Everywoman 1950
What was 1950 like? The first thing to say is that rationing was still in effect for sweets, sugar, meat and petrol amongst other items. The bread and clothes rations had ended in 1948 and 1949 respectively, while the petrol ration was becoming much more generous. A few months before this magazine was published, the soap ration was removed. These were reactions to the growing unpopularity of the ruling Labour Party who had won the 1945 election with a majority of 146 seats.

What was a Christmas magazine published three months after the start of World War II like? Join me as I look through the pages of the Picture Post from 23 December 1939.
Christmas Magazines Through The Years Picture Post 1939
dav What Was 1939 Like? On September 3, of course, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that a state of war existed between the United Kingdom and Germany. Prior to this, the whole country was switched to a war footing in preparation with the Women's Auxilliary Air Force and the Women's Land Army set up and reservists and Civil Defence Workers being called up.

What are your feelings about eating meat? I am an omnivore and always will be. However, there are two distinct caveats I now apply to the meat I do eat. First, how much have I been eating recently and second, where does it come from. When I was brought up, most people had meat with nearly every meal. The Sunday roast was a British staple in virtually every household.

What are your two favorite things to wear? I always like to wear my learning lightly 🤣🤣! In a more serious vein, I am very likely to be wearing something comfortable rather than something fashionable or sharp. Give me a sweatshirt or a jumper over anything that would be counted as 'dress to impress'. At this point in the year I love the fact that I can wear Christmas jumpers for a whole month.

There in a nutshell is the problem that the human race has had through the centuries. So much technology has been misused, mainly by people who want to hurt or control others.
