10/10 star review of the Our Flag Means Death episode A Damned Man. "Funny and yet confronting. This episode... well, I really like it for different reasons that I enjoyed the pilot. There are still a lot of funny bits (running the ship aground, of course, but also Stede being haunted by Badminton, the way Buttons is already figuring out who would be best to eat in case of emergency...), but it also deals with bigger and more serious issues. Most of all, of course, racism and prejudicese, but it also shows the way Stede is struggling with himself and his guilt. I do have to say that I love the way it deals with (casual) racism and prejudices, and the way it also shows the other side of the coin and the fact that the tribe is making sure they remain safe. The introduction of Izzy, Fang, and Ivan is perfect, and I love Buttons's 1000 sea creatures. It already feels in character despite not really knowing the character yet. The Blackbeard crew feels menacing compared to this one character who is simply recounting a number of sea creatures! The tonal difference is perfect. I very much liked this episode, as it shows us more of the writers stretching their muscles and weaving real-life issues into a fictional 18th century piracy setting. Just so good!"

10/10 star review of the Our Flag Means Death episode, A Gentleman Pirate. "THE EPISODE WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR! This is the first full appearance of Blackbeard, and it might be the sexiest, badass, rock n roll entrance in a TV show ever. It's hilarious to see the moment he meets "broken jar of Miracle Whip" Stede and rescues him. Their chemistry is instant. The show really starts crackling with with and snark and heart and silly humor. This is where we start to realize we're watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail meets The Princess Bride, meets Muppet Treasure Island. Best of all absurd worlds. It's all gravy from here on out. If you heard about their great bromance, no you didn't. You're in for a huge, wonderful surprise."

"Wasn't expecting to be Devastated!"
10/10 star review of the Our Flag Means Death episode Wherever you go, there you are. "Wasn't expecting to be Devastated! What the hell David Jenkins? This entire show has been so wholesome and lighthearted. It ended on such a dark yet hopeful note. This is an incredible show and I think if it gets renewed, it could be big. The chemistry between the actors is very rare and fun to watch onscreen. Definitely give this show a try. The rewatchability is crazy and the final episodes will rip your heart out."

10/10 star review of the Our Flag Means Death episode Red Flags. "sailing into the eye of the storm. Ed's self-destruction is delivered pitch-perfect by Waititi. The oscillation between the soft-spoken, understated terror he exudes and the unravelling chaos is hard to watch, but necessary for Ed to go through. And Waititi and O'Neill's scenes together are beautifully, horrifyingly toxic, right until the bitter end of the episode. The crew's reunion with Lucius is a bright spark of hope in their storyline. His trauma with Ed's murder attempt and the other things that have happened to him since then are handled with real heart and sympathy, which also makes it possible to find space for the comedic moments. Nathan Foad delivers a wonderful performance. And Stede's growing understanding on how far Ed has gone, coupled with his insistence on that he still isn't lost beyond hope mirrors beautifully the audience's view of him. We, too are in love with this man, and we, too are not ready to give up on him. One of the lighter highlights are the new cast members and characters! Just as it was with season 1, every single new character is an instant new favourite. Oluwande's storyline with Zhang Yi Sao and Jim's with Archie are both wonderful."

10/10 review of the Our Flag Means Death episode Fun and Games. "beautiful continuation, great performances all round. I was so giddy this morning, getting up to see the two new episodes of my favourite show. Sitting there with my breakfast on the couch, I already had to put it aside because I just got too excited to eat. I am so far gone for this show. I absolutely LOVED to see Anne Bonny and Mary Reed since I have been dying to see them on the show ever since there were rumours. And what performances Rachel House and Minnie Driver gave!!! I hope we'll see them again (since they're taking on the pirate's life again?). The way Ed slowly softens up to Stede again, first lying upset under a blanky on the couch like the babygirl he is, and then Stede sAYING I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU TO HIS FACE AND THE WAY HE SMILES SOFTLY AT HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME AGAINNNNN. Also Buttons was so good this season, I will miss him so much but I respect his choices."

The charming adventure in this ep has an A-plot and B-plot that come together at the end in the show's signature mix of warmth, joy, and humor, mixed with melancholic sadness. And underneath it all is an ever-greater suspense and danger drawing ever-closer to our heroes (unbeknownst to them)! This episode reveals the tragic origin story of one of our main characters, and explains their epic quest for revenge (while furthering the show's meditation on the very concepts of violence and revenge), and has several absolutely beautiful and heartwarming moments of romance and love."

The sense of humour, zaniness, absurdity, yet with the thrumming pulse of a big tender heart, are all still intact from season one. I love Ruibo Qian's turn as Zheng Yi Sao. I mean, obviously representation galore. But also I love the sultry timbre of her voice, strong and powerful, and her facial expressions promise an awfully great performance to come. Lovely to see the New Zealand coastline already being put to beautiful scenic use! So happy to see Spanish Jackie be a part of it, and the Swede really is husband material, I'm glad he's getting his happy ending. One down.... several to go. Also I already deeply dislike Ricky but you gotta give the actor his due, he threw everything into every line and it was great. I think a lot of fans knew things aboard the Revenge would be pretty grim, but... wow. Like, wow. But I was so JAZZED to see Madeleine Sami. Between her and Ruibo we're going to be getting some good female contributions to the ensemble, which I know was one of the few notes many had about last season. I really watched this one and thought, oh yeah, we are SO BACK. I knew this was going to be a wild, but great, ride."

"A stellar episode that starts to really cement what Ed and Stede mean to each other."
8/10 review for the Our Flag Means Death episode The Art of F**kery. "Heartfelt and Hilarious. The guys get wind of a Dutch ship due to pass by and decide to create a ruse to trick them into coming aboard, so that they can test their skills as pirates and turn the tables on them. Izzy decides that this is the time that Edward needs to live up to his promise of learning from Stede and then getting rid of him, but taking his ship. Only, ever since Stede rescued Ed from those posh knobs at the boat party, Ed has grown too fond of Stede to harm him. This is also an episode with some heartfelt confessions, that make you fall in love with these 2 even more. A stellar episode that starts to really cement what Ed and Stede mean to each other."

"A win for everyone who has ever felt like an outsider."
10/10 review from the Our Flag Means Death episode The Best Revenge Is Dressing Well. "Hilarious and Heart. One of my favorite episodes where many of the cast (and the guest stars) get to shine. There's a lot of intentional absurdity, but also a lot of genuine underlying emotion. The 'pyramid scheme' and the revenge thanks to Abshir are some of the most delightful bits of the season and you have to cringe for Ed as he realizes he's the butt of the joke. A win for everyone who has ever felt like an outsider. (Note: big round of applause for the costume designers who went whole hog this episode! The rich people are delightfully over the top. Not historical, as historical is not the point, but perfect for setting the characters.)"
