I think it’s really uneven & depends on a lot of factors. It’s my first year teaching rhet comp and it’s striking how many kids describe their HS experience (writing especially) as mindless test prep, rigid rule following, & generally useless. Lots of learning/unlearning happening.

So many thoughts on why this might be the case. I think you’d find Robert Scholes duology on “the rise & fall of English” useful for examining this shift, though you might disagree with his conclusions.

The cruel irony is having kids forced me to be more discerning with how I use my “free time.” It’s like I developed time management as soon as I had no more personal time to manage. 😅
