Additionally, we retested a few participants 1.5 years after the training completion. We found that 9 out of 10 participants became specifically anosmic again, what shows that in the case of specific anosmia, the smell training effects are only transient.

We found that after two months of a systematic smell training, most of the participants gained sensitivity to odors they were unable to detect at baseline.

Our new paper on olfactory plasticity has just been published in Cortex 🧵

Some people with a healthy sense of smell are unable to perceive a few selected odors, a phenomenon known as specific anosmia. We checked if people can gain some perception of these smells via training.

Excited to share that starting December, I’ll be switching my role at the Institute of Psychology, University of Wrocław, to an assistant professor. Looking forward to this new chapter!
