More details would be welcomed, however I maintain that at least in this instance, if their assertions are to be believed the lack of novel exploits and use of open source tools means that standard security practices would've been sufficient to protect the targets

If you're looking for an alternative to play with check out "EarSketch" which originally came out of GA Tech. Very similar idea. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the inspiration for Strudel. I used to use it with some of the more advanced kids when we'd do "Hour of Code"

What time were you out? The best I got was around 11-1130ish but never got bright enough I could see clearly. Finally gave up around 1230 when things seemed to have settled.
