In the U.S. there is no legal requirement to be a citizen to buy a house. 31% of U.S. unauthorized immigrants (4.2 million) own houses. But that isn’t why U.S. home prices are so high (there are 132 million homeowners overall), the problem is restrictive zoning near major cities.

It depends on model size. There are models where inference on a single GPU is possible. But large model training typically requires collocated GPUs with precision timing for efficiency.

A friend of mine melted aluminum in a little crucible maybe the size of a food processor. It was portable, he’d take it to parties and cast commemorative ingots for people.
