Applying proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics and bioinformatics to medical and biological research questions | located @Ruhr-University Bochum
Afterwards, we enjoyed the ECR Networking Event, which was perfectly organised by the @ypic.bsky.social members.
We will keep you updated with further posts covering #EuPA2025.

Maxi Schütte also did a great job giving his first talk on his work on a high-throughput metaproteomics sample preparation pipeline during the metaproteomics sessions.

2) McQuaC, our very own tool for quality control in proteomics experiments.

For those who missed them: Both posters are still on the boards today, so take your chance to come and view them!

• Katrin was chosen as the most popular female lecturer in the winter semester 2024/2025.

So we just keep going and look forward to many students who find their way to the MPC and experience the joy of research with us!

BUT – we are very proud of ourselves because
• we manage to inspire more and more students for MPC by offering research-related internship positions.
• the Chemistry lecture in the winter semester 2024/2025 was the most popular lecture in medical studies (chosen by students of the first semester).

Prof. Dr. Katrin Marcus-Alic has even been coordinating the Chemistry lecture in the first semester of Human Medicine for more than 10 years. Honestly, it must be said that Chemistry and Biochemistry are not necessarily among the favorite subjects of medical students.

However, in addition to many internships and courses in “Proteomics” and “Bioinformatics” for undergraduate and graduate students, we are also involved in seminars and lectures in the regular study programs of Biochemistry and Biology.

- Equipped with advanced fragmentation modes like ETD and UVPD and coupled to a FAIMS device, it is a very versatile instrument.
- Initially coupled to a U3000, it received a significant upgrade to a Vanquish Neo in 2023, enhancing its performance even further.

Our FLI was funded through a „Großgeräteantrag” of the @dfg.de, and it has been a cornerstone of our research ever since.
Here are some highlights of our Fusion Lumos:
- It is the only tribrid mass spectrometer in our lab, uniquely combining Ion Trap and Orbitrap technologies.

Together, they provide a robust and reliable platform that continues to drive our lipidomics research forward.
Utilizing both set ups we already successfully quantified serum propionate levels after oral propionic acid supplementation: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39866754/
Oral supplementation with propionate is reflected in the serum of healthy individuals - PubMed
The shown pharmacokinetics can be used in future PA research.

The QExHF delivers high-resolution—essential for distinguishing closely related lipid species—while the Triversa Nanomate, our chip-based nanoESI source, ensures stable sample delivery, low cross-contamination, and efficient ionization.

Depending on the project, we use it with either HPLC-MS or direct infusion via the Triversa Nanomate. This flexibility allows us to tailor our methods and ensures we achieve accurate, reliable results. When paired with the Nanomate, the system has become an important part of our daily research.

In 2021, we shifted its focus to targeted lipidomics—a change that opened new research possibilities and pushed us to refine our analytical workflows even further. Today, the Q Exactive HF, forms the backbone of our lipidomics work spearheaded by @arijan0.bsky.social and Svitlana Rozanova.

Here we enjoy state-of-the-art equipment and would like to introduce our laboratory to you today in a short video. However, some things have already changed again, especially with regard to the number and type of our mass spectrometers, which we will present in further posts. So stay tuned.
