2/2 Blanket bog in good condition absorbs carbon, and can contain more than twice the amount of carbon stored in forests, due to the deep layers of peat that are gradually built. Restoring peatlands can effectively increase carbon uptake, helping to fight climate change.

3/3 We're working in partnership with the National Trust on this project to help them restore peatland across the land in their care in the Peak District. This work is taking place with thanks to funding from Severn Trent and the Nature for Climate Peatland Grant Scheme.

2/3 Stone and timber were lifted by helicopter to the site in order to build gully blocks, which slow the flow of rainwater off the hill to the valley below.

With this dry weather set to continue, please remember to take extra care when visiting moorland landscapes as the vegetation is very dry and can burn easily – don’t smoke or light campfires or barbecues.

The only positive sight in the aftermath of these fires, is spotting oases of sphagnum, which hold up to 20 times their weight in water, and therefore have survived where drier vegetation has burned.
