i simply cannot spend 100 dollars on a video game. this isn't even necessarily a principles thing, i physically could not bring myself to buy a video game and see my bank account go down by the same increment i would if i bought an entire fucking console. nintendo is insane

admittedly i don't think my version of things would be the hottest fantasy manga in a decade but it just goes back to the things that stick in my craw with frieren not actually being interested in most of its own most interesting ideas and implications

frieren's recollection is unimpeachable, and everything we learn that she doesn't know is how he was cool even when she wasn't looking. i think it's a way more interesting question to open up about reckoning with the people we loved *not* being entirely who we remembered them as

actually god sorry while i'm on my bullshit i think a way more interesting version of it would be like... the fallibility of memory and how time wears away the rough edges of your impressions of people? everything we learn about himmel is about how great a guy he is. always.

oh god it's assassin's creed syndrome

i just kinda got sick of frieren being a story that's mostly about the flashbacks. the initial pitch was that all that was over with and done and increasingly ancient history. and yet clearly the past was where anything important or interesting happened, so why even pretend otherwise

there's one arc where frieren time travels to the past and it was there i just put the manga down and quit cold turkey. shameless shit

i could not put up with a series ostensibly about the inevitability of time's passage that could not *ever* bear to leave the past behind, so you could learn the same exact lesson every chapter about how cool the guy who died waiting for his elf crush to realize how much he wanted to bone her

that said fern boobs have balanced out the scales here so i can't be as mad as i could be that the series is popular

i don't say it out loud often lest i be beaten by hammers but frieren really earned my antipathy by being the least interesting version of a legitimately compelling idea. promises a longform mediation on the transience of human lives and how history is remembered and then it has a tournament arc
