Nevermind by rkiveink. Unfortunately, it's no longer available on ao3, but the story is intriguing, the characters deep, and the words pour out of the page to create a harsh, heartbreaking environment. It is a place you don't want to visit, yet you can't bear to leave. Just beautiful.

Even though he's a lifelong republican, there is one saving grace with my father's recent dementia diagnosis. He has become soft, kind, and loving. I am grateful to experience this side of him finally and not the verbally combative side.
