Harnessing the power of research to advance #HealthEquity | Director of Research @rwjf.org‬| she/her
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m reflecting on the things I’m grateful for. In a world that’s so heavy right now, it feels important to pause and lift up the light. Here’s my list so far. What would you add to your list?

Rising costs for childcare, housing & healthcare are hitting families hard. @urbaninstitute.bsky.social created the American Affordability Tracker to show policymakers what it really costs to live securely in every state & district and help inform policy decisions.

700+ NIH grants have been forced to remove words like “equity,” “disparities,” and references to race or gender. These changes shift the meaning, direction, and impact of the study. Learn more about how these requirements are placing researchers in a lose-lose situation.

The Bridge Project gives expecting moms unconditional cash during the most critical time in their child’s life. It’s already supporting families in nine states, and I’m excited to see it expanding to NJ this fall!

Data disaggregation is a key piece of the health equity puzzle. Without it, inequities stay hidden. Proud to see NJ as one of only 8 states that require data for AANHPI people to be disaggregated.

For Gail, Medicaid was a lifeline when she lost her job and health insurance in the middle of breast cancer treatment. She never thought she’d need Medicaid, but now she can’t imagine what she would have done without it. Medicaid saves lives.

Policies that help people and families participate fully in the economy are shown to help them lead healthier and happier lives. Baby bonds are the next step forward. It’s not just a bold idea. It’s building on what we know works.

Powerful episode of @kresge.org’s Pathbreakers series featuring @monahanna.bsky.social‬!

Data has shown us that when families have proper support, it improves economic stability & reduces health disparities. I love how she talks about the importance of this.

Disaggregated data is more important than people realize. It’s not just about having inaccurate data, but it’s about the stories and experiences that get erased when we generalize communities.

A new @urbaninstitute.bsky.social report shows how aggregated data hides the reality that the poverty rates for some Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander groups are more than DOUBLE the national average. When we break down the data, stark economic inequities are revealed.

As we mark Medicaid’s 60th anniversary, we celebrate a program that provides coverage to one in five Americans. The recent #Medicaid cuts aren’t just numbers in a ledger—they will terminate healthcare coverage for nearly 10 million people and families.

Medicaid covers 40 percent of all births. For people of color, who have worse maternal and infant health outcomes, the percentage is even higher. These are more than statistics—they are millions of families having their coverage taken away by the One Big “Beautiful” Bill.

Encouraging news: Alabama state workers will finally gain access to some level of paid leave after the birth, adoption, or loss of a child. While this is real progress and long overdue, it’s also a reminder of how far we still have to go.

When we provide people with unconditional, recurring financial support, we’re not just addressing immediate needs—we’re investing in a future where health and economic inclusion are no longer a privilege for some, but a right for all.
