It was about 5:50pm, so there were still a lot of people around/in the park, just not in that particular area 😅

Secondary rodenticide poisoning is certainly always a major risk (and problem) for our local hawks, but we didn’t see any blood from the nose/mouth, which is often an indicator. It’s possible he hit a window nearby on 5th Ave and recovered long enough to make it back to the park before succumbing.

The Red-tailed Hawk we sometimes referred to as Pale Friend or Pale Kid, doing his part last week to keep the rat population under control 🫡🐀🪶

CW: Very dead rat

That friend went back early this morning and waited until the rangers arrived. I’m thankful to have people who care as much as I do about these animals.

I waited a while in the cold for the rangers, but when it became apparent they weren’t coming until morning, another friend brought a heavy plastic bag to cover the hawk, anchoring it with sticks, and covering it with leaves. We couldn’t stand the thought of him being out there in the open all night

A friend found him late yesterday afternoon, and called it in to the rangers. Cause of death is unknown. I just saw this hawk a few days ago, seemingly fine and healthy. He will likely be sent to the NY DEC for testing; hopefully they’ll share the results with us.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk that I’ve been seeing in Central Park these past two months was found dead yesterday. He was belly-down in a meadow, surrounded by fallen leaves, eyes closed, no obvious signs of injury or illness.

Conditions were not ideal, so neither is my video, but it was still extremely cool to see this owl!!

(this hawk is usually contentedly devouring a squirrel or a rat when I find them, so don’t feel too bad)

Ha! These were bestowed upon me by my mother a while back - they have been in the family for at least 3 decades
