personal account of an intergovernmental quasi-bureaucrat in stockholm. apologies in advance for all posts
i know this is because i (unsuccessfully) tried to use it as an epigraph. a spanish coworker knew the original italian off the top of his head + said 'hmm that's not right', so i had to run it down. zizek was probably riffing off this 2019 alfredo jaar installation www.artribune.com/arti-visive/...

my expert commentary as a longtime international development professional: "not great!"

there was a dvd/laserdisc release of manhattan in 2001 and the reviews and essays make a fascinating time capsule. the closest even roger ebert got to getting it was 'mariel hemingway does a great job of letting you forget she's a child'

good luck to them, they have done and continue to do great work, but in sweden this is not something organizations generally bounce back from

at the time i honestly assumed the kremlin must have figured out how badly the occupation and annexation had backfired and must have been looking for a way out.

well at least now i, personally, have learned a lesson

the return of anti-semitism is probably permanent due to a confluence of several structural reasons:

- fading of the living memory of the holocaust
- the end of liberal hegemony
- Israel's behavior (esp when it equates zionism w judaism)
- tech-driven conspiratorial epistemic fragmentation

agree on the first part, it seems like the second part might be limited to academia (possibly hollywood, i frankly have zero insight there). in my experience in journalism no one on the news side of the operations has been spared

you're right! but you get the same results when you focus on those specific industries.

his recipe is sweet potato/carrots/parsnip but it works great with whatever veg you have on hand. you can also speed it up by starting the lentils cooking in broth in another pot while you chop/fry the onion and veg. makes enough to feed 4-6 people with leftovers

heat 4 tbsp coconut oil in another skillet on medium
cook 6 garlic and some chili for 1-2 minutes (or however spicy/garlicky you want it)
add 1 tbsp cumin seeds, keep going for 30 sec-minute
add half/1 tsp paprika, as soon as its absorbed scrape the tadka into the soup
adjust lemon and salt, serve

bryant terry's incredible lentil soup recipe (from memory)
fry some root veg and a cup of onion in a fair amount of olive oil
add 2 cups green lentils, 1 can of tomatoes, 8 cups stock, salt
30 min later add 3tbsp of lemon juice (or however much lemon you like)
when lentils are done make a tadka:

would add that, as a 41 year old white american man, my lived experience tracks much more closely with bruenig's description than the compact whiner's

well isn't the core problem with the essay that, at least in the US, the equality he's complaining about never actually got started?

you can tell that he either knows or someone off camera is signing for him to either speak up or enunciate more clearly, because his diction is all over the place:

"thepriceofa THANKSGIVING TURKEY was down 33 percent combined to the (overenunciating) BIDEN. Last. Year."
