Amazing new paper analysed 10 million news posts on 7 social media platforms in January 2024 - they found that most content posted is high quality and politically moderate, including on Twitter/X. The problem is that engagement is much higher for the relatively small portion of low quality content.

I’m going to be at #Anthropy next week with @parisawright.bsky.social talking about the evidence on why grassroots community engagement can help solve multiple social issues.

If you’re there, let me know! And check out the session on the final day about positive male role models.

Quite interesting comparison from your Brussels survey. Shame they haven’t included walking but would be easy to add!

Great question! One of my favourite public outreach evaluations is of the Community Vaccine Champion scheme in the UK. By increasing uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine, especially amongst minority groups, the scheme itself delivered a net social value of c.£5.7 million in prevented COVID-19 cases.

Appreciate all the places you can see along the way, making the journey as much a part of the holiday as the destination. Lovely.

Only 1 in 10 of the 2050 most popular films released between 2013-2022 passed the test. The good news though is that the test is quite easy to fulfil and there are lots of creative ways to incorporate climate into narratives without having to make climate the whole topic of the film or show.

Films that passed the Climate Reality Check were more profitable than those which didn’t. I don’t know if this analysis controls for other variables but I feel it at least shows that producers and writers don’t need to worry that including climate will put viewers off.

Results show that films and TVs depicting climate realities are on the rise and popular.

Public understanding of climate impacts is far from perfect, but crucial for widespread climate action. Can art help? Of course!

1) Show climate change exists in the story &;

2) That at least one character knows it.

The criteria were inspired by the Bechdel-Wallace test for gender representation.

They have an urgent need for laptops and wiped smartphones so just posting more details here. These are important because you can’t even apply for a job if you don’t have access to a phone and computer (let alone being able to stay in touch with loved ones).

Back to potholes. Potholes are unsafe and ugly. People want to live somewhere nice. If they don’t enjoy their area, they probably won’t choose walking over a car. My hypothesis is that when people in polls say they care about potholes, they’re trying to tell us they want their area to be cared for.

If we want more people to walk we also need to provide places for people to sit and rest - it might be tiring to walk rather than drive, so we need to make #modeshifting comfortable. That also means providing toilets!

Also kids are slower walkers and need places to stop and rest, with their carers. But often our streets don’t have seats or even places for parents to stop and help their child tie a shoelace or take a sip of a drink! Young kids can’t walk and drink at the same time!

Which street would you rather walk down with your kids? This is a project in Baltimore to turn an unloved pavement into a racing track. All the research shows that if you want people to walk they need to feel motivated to do so. What better way than to turn a boring school run into a game?

Or, if you’re local to South East London, visit the hub in the Glades Shopping Centre in Bromley this weekend (23rd and 24th November)!

And it’s much better that people can ask them in a safe environment where they won’t be judged for being a climate sceptic or an eco warrior.

If you live in South East London and want to see for yourself how community #climate engagement can help bypass ideological divides and equip people with the skills and knowledge to live a more sustainable lifestyle come along to the @Greener&Cleaner #ChristmasFair.
