I see the “smear your graduate students in an email to all of Columbia” button has been pressed again.
In the last week, SWC has continued an ongoing pattern of false statements, delivered via emails and social media posts, including personal targeting of specific members of the University’s bargaining team. These behaviors, and the union’s broken agreements during negotiations, have fallen far below the standard we all should expect from members of the Columbia community. The hostile conditions they have created bear no resemblance to the serious, vigorous bargaining process that has led to six successfully concluded agreements between the University and Columbia’s other unions over the last year, and they are incompatible with good-faith bargaining. Given these circumstances, the University has made the decision to file another Unfair Labor Practice charge (ULP) with the National Labor Relations Board. You can read the full charge here. This was not a decision we made lightly or without mixed feelings, given our hopes for productive in-person bargaining.

Absolutely astonishing that it took a student getting harassed for her niqab (off campus!) for our president to write that maybe Muslim students don’t feel supported by the admin. But only vis-à-vis Zohran’s election.

In the meantime, ICE can abduct Muslims on campus with impunity.
We are an institution in and of New York. All our students spend a lot of time off campus. Their experiences outside of our gates, particularly if they are confronted with hateful acts of discrimination or harassment, can have deep and lasting effects on their experiences as students. Our Muslim and Arab students are reporting a heightened sense of anti-Arab and anti-Muslim tension, bias, and hate, especially in the buildup to and aftermath of the mayoral election. Many students have told me they have turned inward, fearful of broadly socializing and of being ostracized. They say they have not always felt supported by the administration, and that they are often not comfortable leaning on the larger Columbia community for

Shout out to August 13, 2025, the first time a clanker well actuallyed me and then tried to gaslight me (telling me I’m using pandas or an old version of Polars) before conceding five exchanges later that I was right all along and the method `.groupby()` does not exist.

Another Friday, another info-dump from the Columbia admin in which they throw a union under the bus in front of a captive audience.

This time featuring the _university_ filing an unfair labor practice _against the union_.
From a Columbia mass email: strike action over bargaining. The union's counterproposal rejected mediation efforts and included an extension only until September 30, 2025, with even more significant unbargained-for pay increases, leaving courses vulnerable to a potential strike in the middle of the term. To date, SWC has shown little interest in bargaining over the terms and conditions of employment for the student employees it represents—or in bargaining at all. Taken together, all of these factors lead us to conclude that SWC will not engage with the University to bargain in good faith. As a result, we are now taking the difficult step of filing an Unfair Labor Practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board. You can read the full Unfair Labor Practice Charge. The University's legal claims have several grounds, many of which have been described in prior updates including on July 28, July 2, and June 17, and in updates to faculty on June 2 and April 28. The University did not take this step lightly, and our goal remains to negotiate a fair, competitive, and sustainable agreement
